Service - Psalm 23 The Lords my Shepherd from “The Scottish Psalter” (1650)

1.       The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want;
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

2.       My soul He doth restore again,
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
E’en for His own name’s sake.

3.       Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear none ill.
For thou art with me, and thy rod
And staff comfort still

4.       My table Thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.

5.       Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me,
And in God’s house forevermore
My dwelling-place shall be.

In memory of Joyce Cartwright 12th May Ardsley Crematorium

Joyce was born on 21/05/27 to Stanley & Ellen Hall in Hoyland

She was joined by her “little brother”,  Geoffrey 2 years later, who she “looked after” as a child & kept out of mischief – as all big sisters do !!

The “Hall” family was a large family - Joyce & Geoff had more than 50 cousins all living in the “Hoyland area”, if you were called “Hall” & a Green Grocer you were definitely part of “the Hall family”, there was & still is a “Hall Street” in Hoyland town centre where many of the family lived & from where they operated the family business

As the family prospered they moved to South View Rd, Hoyland, while the Green Grocer business progressed from Horse & Cart to Wagons – Joyce was especially fond of the horses as a child, in particular the last horse “Fanny”, whose “hoof” was immortalised in a pewter ashtray, that, later in her life became one of a number of treasured & recognisable memories from her childhood

After schooling Joyce went to Barnsley College, where she studied Fashion Drawing, this was a passion which she wished to purse, she was accepted into College in London to study Fashion Design, unfortunately this was not the done thing in the late 1940’s (young women did not leave home & purse careers in London), she subsequently had to surrender her dream & worked in clerical / administration thereafter, but never lost her flair or love of clothing & was always “smart” often wearing green, which was her favourite colour

Church was always important to Joyce & she was a valued & respected member of St Peters C of E, Hoyland, over the years receiving numerous letters of gratitude for her contributions, in particular her floral arrangements, embroidery on the church flag & commitment to Christian Aid Week

As a young woman Joyce had TB, after recovering she was advised to “get plenty of sun”, she achieved this with family holidays in Torbay & Filey & later through foreign travel – travelling abroad in the 60’s when it was virtually unknown, Italy in particular was a favourite

It was on a foreign holiday that Joyce met Wilf (& his daughter Elaine), who she married in Dec 1968 at St Peters C of E, Hoyland

Wilf came from Doncaster & it was at this point that Joyce moved to Doncaster, unfortunate after a brief marriage of less than 18 months she was widowed

While trying to resolve issues surrounding Wilf’s pension, Joyce sought help from the Union, in doing so, she met Denis Cartwright in a professional capacity

Some years later Joyce & Denis crossed paths again, becoming friends & eventually an item in 1974

Joyce was immediately enveloped into Denis’s family of 4 children – John, Gillian, Malcolm & Ann

It was a protracted courtship & by the time of their marriage in Jan 1984, Denis’s family had expanded from 4 children with partners, 10 grandchildren, as well as close relationship with the children and partners of Denis’s sister Margaret

A total of 14 grandchildren or near grandchildren attended the wedding at All Saint Parish Church Intake Doncaster

Joyce was embraced by her new family, she thrived in this new environment, there is little doubt to all that knew her, that in her life with Denis she was content, they were a devoted couple & that this was undoubtedly the most fulfilling part of Joyce’s life, as she was surrounded by a large “homely & welcoming” family

Denis & Joyce’s grandchildren James and Nicholas would sleep over & as all grandchildren were spoilt - Grandmas tea was better because it had sugar in it & there were sweet treats from the “glove box” in Grandads car !

Filey continued to play an important part of family life & it was always a favorite destination for quiet days out & of course more rowdy occasions with grandchildren, encompassing compulsory visits to The Brown Room (for fish and chips) & Mick’s Toy & Joke shop, however, on one occasion Joyce must have regretted buying  James a pellet gun & then having to retrieve a pellet from his nose before they brought him home !

Christmas times were especially important, surrounded by family - Joyce’s Christmas specialty was the trifle (a proper one where you could not drive home afterwards) & homemade mince pies

One of Joyces grandchilrens abiding memories was visiting the Cotswold Farm Park with Grandma & Grandad & the goats trying to eat Joyce’s handbag – not surprisingly the goats didn’t stand a chance, not much got the better of Joyce !

Unfortunately after 10 precious years together Denis sadly passed away in Jan 1994, leaving Joyce to forge a different life, once again she turned to her local Church of the Good Shepherd, Edenthorp, where she embraced the Church Community & helped raise funds with friends Lilian, May & Beatrice

Embracing her faith, Joyce took a holiday of a lifetime, a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she sailied on the Sea of Galilee on the Holy Boat & visited Bethlehem & Nazareth

Joyce always had a strong relationship with her niece Elizabeth, but they grew progressively closer during this period as they spent more time together, with Liz sleeping over, it gave them chance to chat late into the night, with the odd drink !

Unfortunately, in recent years Joyce’s health deteriorated with the onset of Alzheimer’s, resulting in her going into Residential Care in Valley Park Wombwell in Jan 2012

Despite this, Joyce thrived in her new environment, thoroughly enjoying new company & forming new friendships with residents & staff alike, she still maintained her sharp wit & woe betide if you couldn’t get the spellings correct in the crossword

Joyce was initially able to maintain an external social life, going regularly to St Michaels RC Church, Wentworth Garden Centre, Meadowhall, local Pubs for lunch, BBQ with family, Seaside day trips & Christmas dinners – One year Christmas was a Vicar of Dibley special, as after a confusion she had Christmas Dinner in the Home & with her family

Joyce always enjoyed the Social Events within the home, especially School visits & Vocal artists, who she was always prepared to join in & have a good time

As Joyce’s illness progressed, her memories faded & reverted to very early & happy memories of her childhood with her mum, dad, brother Geoff & her beloved dog Judy

Joyce sadly passed away peacefully on 25th April 2020 in Valley Park Home a couple of weeks short of her 93rd birthday

Its without doubt fair to say that anyone who knew Joyce will never forget her & that she was loved by generations of family alike, not least of which were those in the Valley Park Home who became her family also

Its in recognition to her later life & the love & care given at Valley Park that her final journey was from her last home

As a celebration of her life & her love of Denis, Gill & Andrew have arranged to rename Denis’s bench in Filey, in recognition of their love & devotion, where everyone can visit & reflect on their lives

Joyce Cartwright beloved wife, mother, grandmother, auntie & friend rest in peace

Mid Service - “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, Cecil Frances Alexander (1848)

Chorus
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colours,
He made their tiny wings.

Chorus

The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning,
That brightens up the sky;

Chorus

The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one;

Chorus

The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows for our play,
The rushes by the water,
To gather every day;

Chorus

He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

Chorus

The Lords Prayer

Service ends - “I the Lord of Sea and Sky”, Dan Schutte (1981)

1.                I, The Lord Of Sea And Sky,
I Have Heard My People Cry.
All Who Dwell In Dark And Sin,
My Hand Will Save.
I Who Made The Stars Of Night,
I Will Make Their Darkness Bright.
Who Will Bear My Light To Them?
Whom Shall I Send?

Chorus
Here I Am Lord, Is It I, Lord?
I Have Heard You Calling In The Night.
I Will Go Lord, If You Lead Me.
I Will Hold Your People In My Heart.

2.                I, The Lord Of Snow And Rain,
I Have Borne My People’s Pain.
I Have Wept For Love Of Them, They Turn Away.
I Will Break Their Hearts Of Stone,
Give Them Hearts For Love Alone.
I Will Speak My Word To Them
Whom Shall I Send?

Chorus

3.                I, The Lord Of Wind And Flame
I Will Tend The Poor And Lame.
I Will Set A Feast For Them,
My Hand Will Save
Finest Bread I Will Provide,
Till Their Hearts Be Satisfied.
I Will Give My Life To Them,
Whom Shall I Send?

Chorus
